Elder Patriot – Former Speaker of the House, and Never Trumper, Paul Ryan is hawking a new book that trashes President Trump. Stupid is as stupid does.
(Washington Examiner) Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan expressed how he truly felt working with President Trump when he was in Congress in an upcoming book, American Carnage.
Ryan chose to not run for reelection in the 2018 midterm elections, seeing retirement as an “escape hatch” in not dealing with Trump anymore, according to the Washington Post.
“I told myself I gotta have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right,” Ryan added. “Because, I’m telling you, he didn’t know anything about government … I wanted to scold him all the time.”
Ryan said he and others worked hard to stop Trump from “making bad decisions. All the time.”
Bad decisions? Despite Ryan’s profligate spending, the economy is at record levels. And, unlike the Obama-Ryan economy, Blacks and Hispanics are benefiting the most.
President Trump, ever the masterful counter puncher, took to Twitter and began landing haymakers on the failed vice presidential candidate and speaker.
While Ryan contents himself with attacking the character of President Trump – Ryan actually supported high-character presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016 – his record as Speaker, is indefensible.
Trump correctly called attention to Ryan’s deliberate attempt to undermine Republican fundraising. Ryan raised only $15 million during the first two quarters last year, and abysmal amount for an election year.
As a result he relinquished a 42-seat majority and ceded control of the House to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.
With Ryan finally gone, Kevin McCarthy was elected Minority Leader. He raised $33.7 million since January – more than double Ryan’s total over the same period.
McCarthy released a statement explaining the importance:
“The substantial resources raised thus far will allow us to take our vision and message to the people—and expand the map by outworking, out-recruiting and exposing the corrupt, inept new Democrat socialist party. Together we will restore a government that put America first and every American back on top.”
Likewise, Ryan was a disaster in negotiating spending with Democrats. Following in the wake of John Boehner, Ryan continued the previously unheard of policy of eschewing the budgeting process and passing omnibus spending increases.
Ryan was so accommodating to Barack Obama’s spending whims that after one Omnibus had been signed, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gloated:
“Well, if you would’ve told me this year that we’d be standing here celebrating the passage of an omnibus bill, with no poison pill riders, at higher [spending] levels above sequesters than even the president requested, I wouldn’t have believed it, but here we are. Almost anything, the Republican leadership in the Senate achieved this year, they achieved on Democratic terms… Democrats had an amazingly good year.”
Ryan helped Democrats achieve more than they hoped for while Americans were forced to eat the cost. Imagine that. Why isn’t he a Democrat?
I met Paul Ryan on two occasions. I found him to be among the most disingenuous people I’ve ever met.
The fact that Ryan’s book isn’t a mea culpa for his incompetence. The fact that he’s not on an apology tour, exposes a disqualifying level of hubris on a par with Barack Obama.
