ELDER PATRIOT – The United Nations Security Council was set to vote to condemn the Israeli settlements on the West Bank. The United States has the ability to veto that resolution but President Obama had given Israel no assurance that it would. Many observers viewed this as Obama’s final opportunity to put another thumb in Israeli President Bibi Netanyahu’s eye.
Then, on the eve of the vote, Donald Trump released this statement:
“The resolution being considered at the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel should be vetoed. As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations.”
Almost immediately our longtime ally Egypt scuttled the action by requesting the vote to be delayed…indefinitely!
The president-elect relied on backchannel negotiations with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and U.S. negotiators to accomplish his goal.
Once again Trump has shown how to use leverage to create a deal that’s favorable to American interests. Someone tell Obama that Trump doesn’t have magic wand, just superior negotiating skills and a love of America.
