ELDER PATRIOT – Mitch McConnell is doing everything in his power to prevent Donald Trump from advancing his America First agenda. Whatever opposition Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are mustering is nothing compared to the obstructionism of the Senate’s Republican Leader.
McConnell fought Ted Cruz hammer and tong from shutting the government down when Barack Obama was president but now that Trump is president he sent the Senate home for 10 days of vacation less than two months after first convening.
While President Trump has been busting his hump working up to 20 hours on some days, McConnell and the do nothing senate that he presides over have confirmed only 14 of the 549 senior level positions that Trump needs to run the numerous departments, bureaus, agencies and the rest of the government in a manner consistent with his agenda.
By granting his colleagues a vacation that they haven’t earned McConnell is signaling that he has no intention of helping this president accomplish the things that he promised Republican voters he would.
If you add the 120 vacant federal judgeships to the other unfilled positions, add in the debate time dedicated to Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation, and calculate the current confirmation rate, it will take almost 7 years for Trump to have his full team in place.
This is absolutely outrageous but it shouldn’t come as a surprise. We told everyone two years ago that, “McConnell will best be remembered for feathering his own nest while America racked up debt from which it might never recover. At a time when American’s needed a strong counter in Congress to an arrogant and out-of-control President, McConnell instead was the man the President could count on to organize the Republican vote.”
Have people forgotten McConnell’s words at the Republican National Convention only six months ago?
“We put Obamacare repeal on the president’s desk. He vetoed it. Donald Trump would sign it!”
We’re waiting Mitch.
McConnell’s foot dragging means that Obama’s holdovers will continue running the government’s day-to-day operations in direct opposition to President Trump’s orders well into the foreseeable future.
Chuck Schumer couldn’t ask for anything more. Again, this could’ve been predicted. In 2015, with McConnell in control of a Republican majority, Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer told reporters shortly after the $1.1 trillion omnibus bill was passed that, “Almost anything, the Republican leadership in the Senate achieved this year, they achieved on Democratic terms… Democrats had an amazingly good year.”
President Trump is likely to be saddled by McConnell’s commitment to preserving the status quo of the administrative leviathan created by Barack Obama and his Democratic colleagues in the Senate for the entirety of first term. McConnell won’t be up for re-election until 2020.
The swamp is indeed deep and Trump will need our help in draining it. By now it should be obvious that it’s just not good enough to vote for Republicans in general elections. They gave us this mess and now they are opposing Trump’s efforts to clean it up.
You must campaign and vote for “America First” conservatives in the primaries if you want to truly change the politicians who are blocking changes to the status quo. Only we can drain the swamp of our electoral mistakes.
