Elder Patriot – Occasionally an event takes place that crystallizes the difference between liberals and conservatives. Both sides claim to love America and the freedoms she affords us but at times like these we are confronted with the truth.
Tony Burditus is a former Green Beret. His commitment to defending America is beyond question.
Tony and his wife of 32 years, Denise were among the Rt 91 Harvest concert goers when the viewing grounds became a killing field. Denise was killed in the hail of bullets that rained down on them.
Burditus was a guest of Sean Hannity’s where he was asked what an appropriate would be as the nation “races into a big debate over gun control.”
Hannity: “You lost your wife. What is the right thing for the country to do and how to handle it?”
Burditus: “It was a tragedy, Sunday night. I still will never give up my rights.”
Tony Burditus is a man in the mold of our Founding Fathers who after a long and arduous war decided that it was better to have an armed citizenry than not.
“On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed.”
– Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, 12 June 1823
“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
– Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
“To disarm the people…[i]s the most effectual way to enslave them.”
– George Mason, referencing advice given to the British Parliament by Pennsylvania governor Sir William Keith, The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adooption of the Federal Constitution, June 14, 1788
“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined…. The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun.”
– Patrick Henry, Speech to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 5, 1778
“The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”
– Samuel Adams, Massachusetts Ratifying Convention, 1788
Ultimately Burditus sounded like he was channeling Thomas Jefferson:
“I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.” – Thomas Jefferson (author of the Declaration of Independence) in a letter to James Madison (author of the Constitution), January 30, 1787
As far back as I can remember liberals were always prepared to compromise our freedoms to meet the demands of the enemies of liberty. Back in the late sixties liberals were coalescing around the mantra of “better Red than dead” as the Soviet threat became more imminent.
They have never stopped acquiescing, not with North Korea, not with China, and not with Iran. Not with terrorists. They are willing to negotiate not only their freedoms but also those of our allies as well as your freedoms and mine.
John 15:13 tells us that, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
It’s at times like these that liberals let us know just how little they care about the freedoms men like Burditus sacrifice so much to protect.
It’s at times like these that we come to understand just how little liberals who claim to love our country are prepared to fight to defend its Constitution.
It’s at times like these we learn who our friends are.
