It was just 10 days ago when Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer threatened to revoke the medical licenses of any doctor or pharmacist who attempted to prescribe chloroquine to treat their patients suffering from coronavirus.
MICHIGAN – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs warns that prescribing hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for treatment of COVID-19 ‘without further proof of efficacy’ may be investigated for administrative action; reaction from Dr. Jeff Colyer, former Kansas governor. (video)
Given reports by a number of medical professionals claiming significant success when using hydroxychloroquine in treating patients with COVID-19, the virus that originated in Wuhan, China the governor’s actions made little sense.
Though these studies do not prove efficacy, the results were so promising the authors of the most famous study concluded:
“We therefore recommend that COVID-19 patients be treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to cure their infection and to limit the transmission of the virus to other people in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the world.”
It made no sense unless, Governor Whitmer was intent on putting her finger in President Trump’s eye after he became the first political figure to suggest that the drug, first used to treat malaria, might – M.I.G.H.T. – be an effective treatment for patients who had nothing left to lose.
The governor has been, after all, prominently mentioned to be Joe Biden’s running mate.
Governor Whitmer was shown to have the same prescient grasp of the situation as Biden when, just a few days later, the FDA added Hydroxychloroquine to the list of approved drugs for treating the novel coronavirus.
Whitmer did an about face and begged the FDA for the drug.
Good thing for Democratic State Rep. Karen Whitsett of Detroit who learned March 30th that she had tested positive for COVID-19.
Her doctor was able to prescribe the malaria drug and she started taking hydroxychloroquine the next day.
Now Rep. Whitsett is crediting President Donald Trump who touted the drug — for saving her in her battle with the coronavirus.
Whitsett said that she was feeling relief in less than two hours.
Personal story… My 82-year-old cousin has COPD and was in the hospital for pneumonia. She recovered but was two weak to go home so she was sent to a physical rehabilitation facility.
It was there that she contracted COVID-19. Two days ago they got the okay to treat her with Hydroxychloroquine. She’s not out of the woods yet but her improvement overnight was astounding.
Congratulations to State Representative Karen Whitsett of Michigan. So glad you are getting better! https://t.co/v6z46rUDtg
