Elder Patriot – Moments ago ESPN reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reaffirmed a policy that had been written into the players’ handbook but was abandoned after the election of Donald Trump.
Players will once again be expected to stand for the National Anthem if they’re on the field for its playing or offending teams will be subject to fines iF they do not comply.
“In make the announcement Goodell said, “We want people to be respectful of the national anthem. We want people to stand — that’s all personnel — and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That’s something we think we owe. [But] we were also very sensitive to give players choices.”
When the controversy fist flared up following President Trump’s harsh criticism of the disrespect being shown by kneeling players while our National Anthem was being played we cited a Washington Post article that identified the specific rule pertaining to player behavior found on pages A62-63 of the league’s game operations manual:
“The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
“During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”
Trump has been determined from Day 1 to restoring the pride and dignity of our demoralized national psyche.
May God Bless his efforts.
