ELDER PATRIOT – The seditious Left has been shouting that Republicans are attempting to steal a seat in the Supreme Court because they refused to entertain the nomination of Merrick Garland for the better part of last year.
To believe this argument you first have to accept that the seat vacated by the death of Antonin Scalia belonged to Obama and the Democrats and not to the American people.
As a candidate, Donald Trump released a list of twenty-one judges from which he’d choose his nominee. He also made the appointment central to his campaign declaring the importance of the Supreme Court at every campaign rally.
Essentially, Trump urged the American people to fill this vacancy with their choice for president. This is the essence of Democracy, is it not?
Now that President Trump has nominated Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacant seat, liberals have become desperate as they come to terms with the fact that their chance of controlling the nation’s highest court has slipped away from them. They are promising to do everything in their power to block his confirmation. In fact, they made that pledge even before President Trump announced Gorsuch as his nominee.
Unfortunately for them Gorsuch’s record is so stellar that honest liberal jurists who know the nominee are now coming forward to praise him.
Here’s what Neal K. Katyal who was Obama’s Solicitor General wrote in the New York Times, Why Liberals Should Back Neil Gorsuch JAN. 31, 2017:
“I am hard-pressed to think of one thing President Trump has done right in the last 11 days since his inauguration. Until Tuesday, when he nominated an extraordinary judge and man, Neil Gorsuch, to be a justice on the Supreme Court.”
“More than ever, public confidence in our system of government depends on the impartiality and independence of the courts.”
“…if the Senate is to confirm anyone, Judge Gorsuch, who sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in Denver, should be at the top of the list.”
“I have seen him up close and in action, both in court and on the Federal Appellate Rules Committee (where both of us serve); he brings a sense of fairness and decency to the job, and a temperament that suits the nation’s highest court.”
“…one basic criterion should be paramount: Is the nominee someone who will stand up for the rule of law and say no to a president or Congress that strays beyond the Constitution and laws?
“I have no doubt that if confirmed, Judge Gorsuch would help to restore confidence in the rule of law. His years on the bench reveal a commitment to judicial independence — a record that should give the American people confidence that he will not compromise principle to favor the president who appointed him.”
Whoa!!! Is it possible for Katyal to heap any more praise on Gorsuch? Not only did he praise Trump’s nominee but he also praised the president for respecting the need for judicial independence.
That’s right, President Trump isn’t afraid of an independent judiciary because he has every intention of governing in accordance with the Constitution.
Take that Chuck Schumer and your party of seditious obstructionism!
