ELDER PATRIOT -The people didn’t listen to what Barack Obama was saying opting instead to hear what they wanted to hear when he spoke. Let’s not make the same mistake with Hillary Clinton.
This morning while being questioned by George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” Mrs. Clinton refused to conclusively say she believed the Second Amendment was a guaranteed Constitutional right.
Instead Mrs. Clinton engaged in politispeak carefully softening the sound of what she was saying, “I think that for most of our history there was a nuanced reading of the Second Amendment until the decision by the late Justice Scalia and there was no argument until then that localities and states and the federal government had a right as we do with every Amendment to impose reasonable regulations. So I believe we can have commonsense gun safety measures consistent with the Second Amendment.”
The fact is Justice Scalia was writing for the majority of the Supreme Court Justices in affirming the rights of gun owners in “Heller V. District of Columbia.” The Heller Decision wasn’t Scalia’s alone to make as Mrs. Clinton tried to make it appear.
Even more important though is that without private gun ownership we would not have had the ability to arm our Revolutionary War soldiers. Our Founding Fathers recognized the importance of an armed citizenry as a defense against tyranny from abroad and from an overarching government here at home. The armed populace was and remains a free America’s best homeland defense.
There was never a discussion about limiting the breadth of the Second Amendment at any time in our history as Hillary claimed. The Constitution has always been a document meant to limit the rights of the government, not the rights of the people, but the Founders sought to emphasize the protection of gun rights when they added the Second Amendment in 1791, three years after the Constitution was ratified.
Just as Barack Obama told everyone how he felt when he was unaware that he was being recorded and he saud, “it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,” so Hillary Clinton tells another group she’s raising funds from how she feels about the Second Amendment:
We have remained a free people largely because those elected to run our government have been forced by our gun ownership to respect us. Mrs. Clinton has already displayed her disrespect for our military. Do not give her the opportunity to take our guns and show us how many other ways she disrespects the people.
