Elder Patriot – Florida’s Senate Judiciary Committee will begin studying a bill proposed by Dennis Baxley (R-12) prior to the February 14th massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 students dead by a deranged gunman.
Sen. Greg Steube (R-23) stepped in following the attack and pushed Baxley’s bill to the forefront. Steube was quoted as saying, “I don’t feel gun-free zones protect anyone but criminals, and there is no evidence that says otherwise.”
Under terms of the bill each school’s principal could designate persons to be armed and charged as early (earlier?) responders if and when an active shooter situation occurs.
Senate President Joe Negron (R-25) has shown his openness to any logical suggestions to keeping Florida’s schools safe including calling “for more money for school safety and to allow district superintendents to act in their schools’ best interests.”
Florida Republicans have signaled their recognition that when seconds matter the police are minutes away.
Their bill also recognizes that the Second Amendment stands as the peoples last resort against a government that descends into tyranny. Do progressives not understand this?
Let’s put it in terms they might understand:
Extract from Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith
“… the people can not be all, & always, well informed. the part which is wrong [. . .] will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. if they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. we have had 13. states independant 11. years. there has been one rebellion. that comes to one rebellion in a century & a half for each state. what country before ever existed a century & half without a rebellion? & what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms. the remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. what signify a few lives lost in a century or two? the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. it is it’s natural manure.”
During a recruiting trip to West Point I stumbled upon a plaque the gist of what read, “The cost of freedom is eternal vigilance.” Your freedoms are not something to be outsourced to your neighbor or a cop down the street, but are the responsibility of each and every one of us to protect lest we lose them.
I find it hypocritical to the nth degree that the same police you charged with over aggressive policing just last week you are now willing to give even more power to.
To my progressive “friends”: If you think you’ve mounted a worthy resistance to Trump, try taking my guns and you’ll see what resistance really is.
