Elder Patriot – When Donald Trump was a candidate for this high office he promised us that he had the necessary toughness and smarts to negotiate a trade deal with China that would finally work to the benefit of the United States and of Americans.
Here’s Trump making the promise from the campaign trail:
You might note that the two other promises he made during this short snippet have already been fulfilled; he pulled the U.S. out of the Trans Pacific Partnership and he renegotiated NAFTA.
Trump had constantly bragged of his ability to negotiate with the Chinese, something he noted our previous presidents, and their negotiating teams, only failed at.
Those presidents covered for their inabilities by telling us this was our future and we had to get used to it. “This is the new normal.”
It got to the point where the Chinese sent Obama a message of contempt by completely dissing the former U.S. president upon his arrival at the G20, forcing him to exit the by the rarely-used ass-end exit.
Obama had no chance against the Chinese and sadly, he knew it and acted accordingly.
Voters also realized this and chose to replace Pee Wee Herman with an apex predator. Enter Donald Trump.
This brings us to yesterday’s meeting in the Oval office that President Trump presided over in a vocal and public manner. Present were the entire senior Chinese negotiating team as well as the president’s personally selected dream team.
Trump’s hand-picked bulldogs were there, too: U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, AG Secretary Sonny Perdue, NEC Chairman Larry Kudlow, U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad, and Trade Adviser Peter Navarro. Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sat in.
The Chinese had been counting on their time-tested practice of delay, delay, and delay some more by offering to sign a six-step Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Trump is having none of it:
Trump: I don’t like MOU’s because they don’t mean anything. To me, they don’t mean anything. I think you’re better off just going into a document. I was never a fan of an MOU.
Ambassador Lighthizer: From now on, we’re not using the word “memorandum of understanding” anymore. We’re going to the term “trade agreement.” All right?
Vice Premier Liu: Okay.
With the cameras rolling, President Trump demanded nothing less than a binding agreement, signed sealed and delivered, and completely verifiable or 25% tariffs on $200 Billion in Chinese imports will go into effect in one week.
The transcript of this epic meeting can be read here.
Secretary Mnuchin announces the Chinese delegation will be staying in DC for an additional two-days of negotiations.
The Chinese team can’t leave Washington without a deal to present to Chairman Xi because Trump is preparing to leave for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam later this week.
Commence the fist pumping.
With the phase-two tariffs set to kick in March 1st, Trump has all the leverage in these negotiations. Leverage, that when you look back, did not exist when he took office.
President Trump’s economic nationalism has hit China in the pocketbook, shaving 11% off the value of the Shanghai Stock Exchange. By contrast, Trump’s policies have driven the Dow Jones Industrial Average up by 38%, creating trillions of dollars in new wealth for Americans.
Sundance spoke for every Trump supporter who believed in this man:
Today in presidential history is a day when the import of consequence doesn’t surface until historians apply hindsight. However, those who carry the longest-lens are enjoying these moments in history…. We make with our support of Trump such a sound as all history from these days forward are forced to note, even if they despise us in the writing of it. And when we are gone, our beneficiaries will sing of these deeds in forbidden songs while tending the flickering flame of liberty; for we few lived in the era of Trump.
CTH Reader MLK contributed this:
This short video more than others reveals POTUS Trump is a sharp break from the previous figurehead presidents. A trend that reached its apex with Obama. Americans have a real POTUS, not a figurehead/Pitch Man for the Administrative State.
Needless to add, his transparency, which has played an important role in him seizing back his constitutional (Article II) authority, only increases his leverage versus his political opponents, domestic and foreign.
Trump is the apex predator… our apex predator:
