ELDER PATRIOT – Benjamin Franklin, Signer of the Declaration of Independence “[O]nly a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”
“Whereas true religion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness . . . it is hereby earnestly recommended to the several States to take the most effectual measures for the encouragement thereof.” Continental Congress, 1778
Many people have questioned the religious affiliations of our Founding Fathers but there has never been a serious argument whether they were Deists who believed strongly in the role that Divine Providence played during the formation of our country and the importance that religion and morality would play in keeping our freedoms and protecting our prosperity.
John Adams spoke for the overwhelming majority of our young nation’s leaders when he said our newly written Constitution would be wholly inadequate to the government of any but a moral and religious people.
George Washington wrote that, “Religion and morality are the essential pillars of civil society.”
The Framers were educated, well read, and experienced political philosophers equal to any who came before or since and they recognized that it would be the peoples’ responsibility to keep their government free of corruption. They understood that there were no magic words they could include to prevent the exploitation that attends political misrepresentation.
That is what makes the Fox News Poll released last week so disturbing. Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by six points in the poll.
Fair enough. But when respondents were asked these key questions about Mrs. Clinton their answers were shocking as well as revealing.
When asked if they think the words “Honest and Trustworthy” describes Hillary Clinton only 30% of the respondents said they believe that it does. Sixty-six percent believe those words do not apply to Mrs. Clinton.
When the same respondents were asked if the word “Corrupt” describes Hillary Clinton fully fifty-eight percent of the people said, “yes.”
Mrs. Clinton does scores high mark on experience but what does that mean if all of her experience has only taught her to be nothing more than a better crook?
When two-thirds of the people cannot use the words “Honest and Trustworthy” to describe a candidate that should be disqualifying for the candidate. But, when almost the same majority of people admit outright that the believe the candidate is “Corrupt” we should be asking how to disqualify those people from voting.
