ELDER PATRIOT – California overwhelming voted for Hillary Clinton giving her 2.5 million votes more than Donald Trump. Clinton’s margin of victory in California was greater than her popular vote margin nationwide. In other words, Trump won the other forty-nine states handily.
Without the Electoral College, California would be the tail that wags the dog. A little over a month removed from the election we are seeing what a monumental mistake that would’ve been.
The California Political Review reported in March of 2015 that;
“CalPERS and CalSTRS will in the future, sooner than later, collapse.
“Money manager John Mauldin looked at CalSTRS. Worst case, to be actually solvent he calculated CalSTRS requires an additional $30 billion per year starting now.”
What steps did the Leftists running the government from Sacramento take to address this problem? Nothing. Despite all of their assertions that they care about the “little” guy they chose to ignore them when something could’ve been done.
A year and a half later the same publication ran this headline in August of 2016;
“Actuaries: Real CalPERS Unfunded Liability is $946 Billion—When Will it Collapse?”
Rather than take quick and decisive action California leaders did nothing. Nothing included continuing to welcome illegal immigrants into their state at an increased rate.
How are these two policies related? The answer is simply because everything is related when it comes to making hard decisions about spending on a fixed income. Just ask the California pensioners who have started receiving notification that their benefits have been cut by a whopping 60% overnight.
Especially in light of this report: On June 19, 2014, the Federation For American Immigration Reform released an economic impact study on the cost of illegal immigration in California. It stated that, “A new study released by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) finds that providing education, health care, law enforcement, and social and government services to illegal aliens and their dependents costs Californians $25.3 billion per year according to FAIR’s report.”
The result of Leftist intransigence in California led Fox News to report this morning that the fallout from such lunacy has California pensioners receiving notice that their benefits are being reduced by 60% to prevent an immediate collapse of the system.
This stands as proof that for Leftists there are no sacred obligations. Their current action reducing benefits rather than upholding federal immigration laws shows how far leftist-run governments have gone in violating the trust of the people. This is the essence of tyranny.
It is precisely for this reason that the Electoral College exists. Irresponsible Californians already have a disproportionate vote in the House of Representatives with over 12% of the vote that decides national policy.
Irresponsible spending is not limited to California but it is, almost exclusively, the domain of Leftist states as this map developed by the highly respected Mercatus Center at George Mason University illustrates.
Compare this to the electoral map of the recently concluded presidential election:
Of the ten most indebted states nine voted for Hillary Clinton. On the other hand, the 12 most fiscally responsible states all voted for Donald Trump. Rank and file Democrat voters are similar to spoiled brats – they want what they want and they want it now. And Democrats seeking re-election are happy to kick the can down the road to give it to them. For California the day of reckoning has come.
During the campaign Trump was derided for orchestrating a Populist movement. Now the same people who opposed him using that argument are arguing that the popular vote should prevail. Essentially they have pivoted 180 degrees and are now embracing the ultimate form of populism.
While Leftists are busy doing what they always do, figuring out ways to contort the Constitution for their own benefit, Trump’s supporters were voting to restore financial sanity.
Thankfully, the Framers gave us the Electoral College to protect the responsible from the irresponsible.
