Amnesty International: 80% of Migrant Females Passing Through Mexico Are Raped

Elder Patriot – The fact that President Trump wants to build a wall along the Mexican border should be applauded and not the subject of ridicule and scorn.  Mexico may have a lot to offer but it also has a dark underbelly of narcotics trafficking, powerful drug cartels, violence, criminal gangs, and sex traffickers.  Trump is simply trying to protect American citizens from becoming victims.

The fact that previous presidents did nothing to protect us was not the act of mercy for migrant refugees, it was a sellout to corporate donors who want cheap labor and who couldn’t care less about the communities they settle in because it isn’t theirs.

Now we learn just what a hellhole our southern neighbor can be for those women and girls trying to make their way through Mexico on their way to the United States.

According to Erin McIntyre, Amnesty International has released a report stating that a staggering 80% of migrant women and girls passing through Mexico are raped along their journey.

“Women and girl migrants, especially those without legal status traveling in remote areas or on trains, are at heightened risk of sexual violence at the hands of criminal gangs, people traffickers, other migrants or corrupt officials,” the 2010 Amnesty International report stated. “…Many criminal gangs appear to use sexual violence as part of the “price” demanded of migrants. According to some experts, the prevalence of rape is such that people smugglers may require women to have a contraceptive injection prior to the journey as a precaution…”

Elvira Gordillo is a lawyer who lived along the Mexico-Guatemala border.  She helped migrant women who were trafficked into prostitution:

“I think almost all of the women are abused on the way north.  [These migrants] know the price to pay for getting to the United States. The price is being sexually violated.”

Chiapas, México sits on the border of Guatemala.  Alejandro Vila heads Chiapas’ special prosecutor’s office that is responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes against migrants:

“We have active cases here of officials who’ve been detained and are facing criminal proceedings… for abusing the vulnerable migrant women specifically.  We’ve seen that for woman crossing alone, the risk of becoming a crime victim increases significantly.”

Mainstream news reports have tried to couch this as a travesty that’s taking place along our border with Mexico in an attempt to play on our sympathies with headlines like these:

80% Of Central American Women, Girls Are Raped Crossing Into The U.S. – Huffington Post.

The truth is the U.S. has nothing to do with these rapes.  Most are occurring where the women and girls cross into Mexico from Guatemala, more than 2200 miles away.

Trump read it correctly and all the spin in the world won’t change the facts.  If our southern border became impassable these women and girls would never be in Chiapas in the first place.

We cannot be responsible for the six billion people of the world who have failed to follow our lead and build free, decent and productive societies.

Most of us have realized that we cannot change the world.  We content ourselves living good and decent lives as an example to our children and our neighbor’s children.  We become coaches, teachers, Big Brothers in an effort to mentor those we can reach.

George Bush I called it a thousand points of light.  Together we build a community and hope other communities follow our lead.  And, we protect ourselves from those communities that don’t.

From our Judeo-Christian roots we built a nation that stood as a shining city on a hill for others to emulate, not conquer nor take advantage of.  That they cannot organize a government that serves them cannot be our problem.

Whatever “privilege” we have – white or otherwise – was won with the blood of patriots inspired by the vision of a better future for our children.  It’s time for the rest of the world to understand that.
